The University of Neuchâtel, particularly the Institut de Droit de la Santé (IDS), was the first academic centre specializing in health law in Switzerland. Its subjects of focus include not only private law aspects of health, but also public law, including social security and innovation law. Although academically independent, the Institute is very well introduced in all Swiss government agencies involved with health issues, in particular traditional medicine. This includes the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property and the Swiss Agency for therapeutic products (Swissmedic). Agencies which have been contacted in relation to the present project have all underlined its practical importance and shown deep interest in its outcome. The IDS’ also has strong ties with international organizations dealing with health issues and international trade. These organizations include the World Health Organization (WHO, including its Commission on Intellectual Property Rights, Innovation and Public Health – CIPIH), the World trade organization (WTO), other organizations of the UN system as well as NGOs and public-private partnerships based in Geneva.
